Elon Musk Bids Farewell to Government Role, Praises Trump and the ‘DOGE Mission’

Washington, D.C. – May 28, 2025 — Elon Musk announced the conclusion of his service as a Special Government Employee on Tuesday evening, marking the end of a surprising chapter in his already unconventional career. In a tweet posted to his X (formerly Twitter) account, Musk thanked President Donald Trump for the opportunity to serve and highlighted what he called the “@DOGE mission” — a government initiative aimed at cutting wasteful spending.

“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk wrote. “The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”

The DOGE initiative — not to be confused with the cryptocurrency Dogecoin, though likely named with Musk’s signature flair — stood for the Department of Government Efficiency, a temporary unit created during Trump’s second term to identify and reduce federal budget inefficiencies. Musk, known for his work with Tesla, SpaceX, and X, was brought on in a part-time advisory role to lead the initiative.

While the DOGE mission initially aimed to cut $2 trillion in federal spending over five years, reports suggest the actual reductions achieved were closer to $150 billion due to resistance from within both parties in Congress and bureaucratic pushback. Despite the shortfall, Musk’s influence helped bring attention to under-the-radar waste and inspired several pilot programs around automation and procurement reform.

Musk’s departure follows weeks of growing tension with the administration over its latest spending bill — dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill” by Trump — which Musk criticized for bloating the deficit and undermining the very goals he was brought in to support.

“We started with bold goals. But it’s hard to talk about fiscal responsibility while approving trillion-dollar expansions with no offsets,” Musk told reporters earlier this week. “The DOGE mission can still succeed, but it needs consistency.”

The tweet quickly went viral, amassing millions of views and sparking debate over the role of tech leaders in politics. Critics questioned the effectiveness of Musk’s appointment, while supporters praised him for disrupting the status quo in Washington.

With his government role behind him, Musk is expected to refocus on his private ventures, including SpaceX’s Mars initiatives and the upcoming relaunch of the xAI platform. As for the DOGE mission, its future remains uncertain — though Musk’s closing words suggest he hopes it lives on.
