This is AMAZING!!! One of the rarest of untold history of North American sports is now coming to the forefront on social media platforms. While scrolling Instagram I came across an interesting topic that I had to bring awareness to. (see IG post below)
Today we will talk about the sport of hockey. While at first glance I’ve always looked at hockey as a “white man’s” sport considering how they dominate the National Hockey League or NHL. The NHL was established in 1917 in Canada and was reportedly called the National Hockey Association. But to go deeper into the roots of professional hockey it has now been said that the Colored Hockey League was formed in 1895 and actual predates the formation of the NHL by 20 years or more. Another interesting fact is that the league is said to be formed by the help of the Baptist Church. The league faced the obstacles of politics and racism during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Somewhere around the 1930s the league faded away but is recognized today by the Hockey Hall of Fame for changing the face of hockey and showing diversity in the game.
